In Paris

we took many steps to reach the point of the debriefing/ideas extracting out of the participants, we invested many hours in building the confidence bridge with them, also we did couple of friendly open-talk’s workshops to motivate them to speak about their concerns, we organized also a session about The stereotypes and prejudice.

Then the final step to came when élan interculturel invited young people residing on the site of GrandsVoisins work together with young volunteers of the association to explore the key issues of life on the site.  Through a series of workshops we have explored subjects of community, integration, solitude, gender, preconceptions and prejudice etc.

We created four groups randomly, then we asked them to pick a piece of paper that contains a letter, we had the entire French alphabet in small pieces of paper inside a jar.

Then we asked everyone to find a word that describing the Grands Voisins where all the residents live.

Each members of the 4 groups discussed among them the words that they found, it was rich discussion with diverse points of views

After the internal discussion inside each group we gathered once more for sharing our words and the concepts behind them, we shared the words in the order of alphabet.

Here are the words that we discussed about:

We tried to contact the words together, so we asked the participants to try to find the link between all the words,

we had this structure of words:

Click here to download the PDF report about it

In Madrid, the first phase consisted of generating ideas through interactive methodology, the so called ideas marathon via Twitter where young people of the age between 18 and 28 years old, were invited to upload photos and leave comments about the urban space they inhabit under the following core questions: What are the social and political issues, problems that they feel relevant? How do young people feel about public space? What current urban/social conflictivity do they perceive?

The hashtags we used was called #lasmilyunacarasdelaciudad.

After this first phase, the participants had to choose an area of Madrid where they made walks observing the surroundings, taking interviews, images and videos trying to deepen in the problems previously detected.

These urban walks were followed by brief discussions where we focused on the following aspects: (re)discover citizenship, engage with communities, discuss issues of relevance to their daily-life.

After discovering that one of the main problems that our young people are worried about was the organization of public space and its repercussion on social dynamics, we decided to organize a seminar with the young architect, Marta Kayser. The event took place during the Joint Training Meeting, 02.06.2017, so this way our Artivism partners had the opportunity to witness and also to take part in the debates.

Kayser shared with us her ideas about the importance of the urban design as a tool for social transformation. He focused on the urban actions for human urbanism.

Welfare

It’s a social perception related to stability and confort. To reach this goal inside a society it’s important to develop public politics who aim to renforce it, like increasing the investiments related to education, health and investigative sections. A new society with high levels of welfare and wellness would have such a stronger social cohesion; on the contrary, conflicts’ generation seem to be almost impossible to avoid.

Group

According to RAE dictionary:

  1. Related to a group of people adj.
  2. Something able to get together or collect
  3. A group created for professional, working reasons

Drawing

It’s a process which aims to find esthetic and creative solutions to any kind of problem. Analyzing the situation by an urbanistic point of view, it has a really important role. Besides a right territorial perspective, with appropriately designed spaces, is foundamental for a society which would like to feel part of its own space.

Public Space

We talk about streets, spaces and roads, as even public buildings ( libraries, schools, universities, hospitals, stations, temporary agencies ), gardens, parks and other spaces. The main impact related to this space has the goal to create a contest to facilitate the social cohesion and to declare an unique and defined enviroment.

Social Fissure

There’s a situation like this when two or more social groups have hindering positions to keep stable a certain kind of cohesion. This kind of contrast is usually determined by political reasons and its size can be different- If it’s huge it should also give rise to civil wars ( have a look to the contrast between Popoular and National Front during the Secon Republic which unleashed the Civil War in Spain ).

Urbanism has to be intended as a « blans painting » where you can take a final project and changes which can improve the lifestyle and quality of all the inhabitants in a certain area.

Multigenerational

In an association there are many people who needs to live together and who need to share a common space between different generations. Their needs are different among each others : it’s impossible to compare the ones between a babies and teenagers, or adults and elderly men. Any generation claims its own urban space, than urbanism needs to find a sort of avarage pointto satisfy the majority of needs without damage the rest, finding the best possible harmony among all the members.

Nature

Children

The New Generations chart is effectively important to plan an urban project. Children are the most wheakest group inside the society and they need a space to develop their social skills without running any kind of unuseful risk.

The research of arranged spaces for all the generations always needs to find a sort of balance with the rest of society, also considering special needs of minors.

Thanks to the TIC coming, nowadays citizens have the opportunity to enjoy and use better quality technological services. Popularization of public wifi areas in the main cities exponentially increased the citizens’ attention for mobile phones, impoverishing relations with people in the surroundings.

Nottingham started the IO1 which was developed through an urban walk inviting young people to visit a particular area of Nottingham, Lace Market which is the oldest quarter of the city as a key space to understand the social divisions of the city. This perspective lead to the discussion on issues of belonging, citizenship, communities, exclusion, and identity.

The topics to trigger a discussion included among others:

Issues of belonging in relation to Nottingham/UK

What public spaces participants recognise as their?

Where participants feel excluded? What are the reasons?

Where do they fell safe/unsafe?

Think about both structural and subtle issues of exclusion and discrimination locally.

Broad areas include:

  • education, housing, urban planning, safety & crime, gender, racism, religion, sexual orientation and any other axis of social inequality.
  • What do they think are issues that need to be addressed locally that are not being addressed?
  • What would you like to see in Nottingham (whether a structure, program, funding, local action, etc.), that does not currently exist?

In small groups (2 groups of 3 participants and 1 with four participants) they discussed what they observed during the walk and how they related those issues to the areas where they live in Nottingham.

After that, the discussion was with the whole group when they presented their different issues. They had some disagreements about a few issues such as lack of green spaces and difficulties to cycle in the city. Mostly they agreed with each other on the issues presented.

At that point, we started to register their issues in the white board to create a map of the problems raised. The themes are:

In Budapest through a process of research and study Artemisszió went through different approaches of engaging young people in discussions – the method of walking interview proposed by NTU, the technique of discussion circles that was used by some staff members before – and at the end created a methodology, where the participants passed by different points placed at symbolic spaces of Budapest where activities were offered in relation to special topics (as freedom of speech, migration, poverty, etc.). The final frame was created together with local volunteers who were the hosts at the stations. The ideas about social problems were collected throughout the whole path, but particularly at the start of the game.

We reached young people from diverse backgrounds through the city game, in two levels. The volunteers who prepared the City Game with the staff of Artemisszió were involved in some of our previous groups of different profile, so we had 3 Hungarian youngsters (one of them is a highschool student), 3 international volunteers and interns from Spain, Portugal and Germany and 3 young migrants who are studying/working in Budapest with a long term residence, from Japan, India and Nigeria. The participants of the city game were also very diverse, coming from the universities, from the wider community of Artemisszió and from further on, reached by the facebook event.
